When people asked me if my dad got out okay from the Fort McMurray fire, I would respond with, “yes he did and half of my family is okay too.” So many people I love and care about live in Fort McMurray and it’s truly been a second home to me. There were so many high levels of emotion during the fire, which were felt by everyone I knew.
Through the tragedy, my faith in humanity was restored when people would go into an Armageddon-like fire with gasoline and water to help people to safety. I don’t know that I have ever seen the amount of pride and community this province and the world showed during the blaze.
My darling cousin and family were a part of that. They weren’t sure if they’d still have a home to come back to, let alone a venue to be married in. They almost postponed a year. Upon their return they decided to hone in on their strength and have their wedding this year. Their strength brought everyone together on a very metaphorical and emotional level. I know I bawled my face off coming into the city.
Congratulations to Heather and Rob. I am so humbled I was able to be apart of your day.
